  • UMK's mineUnited Manganese of Kalahari (UMK) is a South African company, mining manganese in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa.
  • The mine is situated 13km south of Hotazel, 42km north of Kathu and 80km north west of Kuruman. About 282 million tons of manganese resource has been found in this region, with the most significant manganese deposits being found on the Botha, Smartt and Rissik Farms.

  • Ore quality
  • manganese ore productionUMK mainly produces a 6x75mm sizing product. A 0x6mm sizing is also marketed when opportunities arise. The products are sold in both the local and export markets. The ore production of UMK was 1.5 million tons in 2010, 2.16 million tons in 2011, over 2.7 million tons in 2012. In 2013, UKM officially opened the last infrastructure of the mine and CEO Johan Kriek said that the production could ultimately reach 4 million tons a year.
